THEORY TEST

a) Multiple Choice QuestionsThis test is very similar to the Learner Driver Theory Test and consists of questions based on the Highway Code and teaching theory. The examination takes place at a Theory Test Centre and comprises:

  • 100 multiple choice questions (computer based touch screen test)
  • The pass mark is 85% and you need a minimum of 80% in each of the four sections, which are:
    • Road procedure
    • Traffic signs and signals, pedestrians, car control, mechanical knowledge
    • The Driving Test, disabilities, law
    • Instructional techniques, publications

(b) Hazard Perception Test (HPT)This is the same test as for a Learner Driver; consisting of 14 one minute video clips and 15 scoring hazards. However, the pass mark is higher than the Learner Driver HPT at 57 out of a possible 75.

Part 1 is a single examination with a 3 minute break between the Multiple Choice and the Hazard Perception Test.  You need to pass both parts of the Theory Test at the same time to obtain an overall pass result.  Your overall pass result is valid for two years.
